Reservations !

Just right opposite to my house in New Delhi, Kalkaji there lives a SC/ST family. It is a poor family, lives in a single room with tin roof shelter and they have 5 kids to dwell. The eldest of 5 kids passed her 12 exams successfully this year and got a decent percentage of about 60 %. I admire her marks given her living conditons. Now this girl, wants to really pursue further education.

In this highly competitive world, and in the country where the ratio of number of students and seats in the college is highly disturbing, it is quite obvious that right to study has become restricted to affluents. Students from middle class and upper class are now a days pampered like anything. They get right atmosphere to study or I would say more than right, best schools, highly nutritous food, millions of tutions and all the other comforts of life. Even after all this, if they dont do well in the exams, many parents are ready with the money also. How can an average student from the lower class can compete with the middle class and upper class students ?

Now that girl because of reservation got through BA, hindi (H) program of Lady Shri Ram College, one of the most reputed college of Delhi University. Had not been seats reserved for them, it would not have been ever possible for her to get admission. I have seen the girl growing and she is hardworking. She did perform decent (upto their standards) during class 10th boards also.

I am really very happy for her. Also, I appreciate her passion for studying. I have seen and known people who even after all comforts didn't study. What I am skpectical about right now, if she will be able to cope up with the studies over there and also LSR girls are really smart. Will she be able to stand amongst them ?

I was totally against reservation until I lived through the above incident. People who live normal middle class life and still avails the benifits of reservation, is an eyesore.

  1. Wow!!!! That's a very nice real life story of a hardworking girl fighting her way out, and how reservation can help someone so much. Your blog has done very good analysis. There are kids who get so many facilities, all the care in the world, and on the other hand there are the under-previliged. I am totally in support of reservation for the economically disadvantaged, but a lot of times the benefits of reservation are used by those who are already very rich, but just that they have a SC/ST certificate!
